OpenPandora Main OS

This project it to track issues relating to the current shipping OS only as found here http://goo.gl/S5JCy. Please state what Hotfix you are running with any issue report. Please ONLY use this to record issues for the main OS and its default included applications - any other application issue reports should go into the Additional Applications project. Issue reports with 'in development OS images' or feature requests for the next MAJOR version (not Hotfix release) should be placed into the OpenPandora Development OS project and reported on the mailing list http://openpandora.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/firmware-dev. Please read this page to find out how to properly report bugs: http://pandorawiki.org/Reporting_bugs

Task Description The next kernel offers switching between a joystick / keyboard mode. In joystick mode, the DPAD and ABXYRL Buttons behave like a joystick buttons and have no keyboard mappings. In keyboard mode, the DPAD and ABXYRL Buttons have keyboard mappings and are NOT registered as joystick. The normal keyboard keys are not affected by this. PXML needs to have a switch added for that and pnd_run should change the mode according to that switch. When the PND app has quit, it should always go back to keyboard mode. The commands are the following: echo 1 > /proc/pandora/game_button_mode # keyboard mode echo 2 > /proc/pandora/game_button_mode # gamepad mode

159Base OSBug ReportMediumSystem > Run PND Application menu item does nothingUnconfirmed
0%
Task Description With both Hotfix 3 and Hotfix 4 Beta the Run PND Application menu item fails to do anything. Possibly related problem is that PND files newly copied to SD card are not recognized and entered on desktop as expected. When you go to Thunar and right click - execute the PND file, nothing happens. Possible fix by copying the PND to another folder on the SD card with Thunar. This makes at least two PND files I had work. Still no response with "Run PND Application" menu, though.

321 CoreFeature RequestLow Support overriding all category fields with .ovr Closed
100%
Task Description

Currently only the main category and the first sub category of the main category can be overridden using a .ovr file while libpnd uses additional PXML supplied category date to construct the desktop file. This makes it difficult to work with PNDs that supply unwanted data in these additional fields.

248 CoreFeature RequestMedium Support for hibernation by caching to SD card Closed
100%
Task Description It would be very desirable that the PandoraOS could hibernate, and that this action can easily be accessed/triggered with either a hotkey or as an action for the max-idle-time-event or lid-close-event. That would be the battery friendly universal action to quickly pause/resume any arbitrary application/task. The current standby mode is far to power consuming for breaks longer than ~ 1 hour. Improving standby mode to be more battery-friendly would of course be too highly appreciated and practical. If hibernation is triggered, RAM content gets written to a special file or partition on a SD card. The boot-manager of course needs to recognize such a RAM-file on SD-cards. In case it finds more than 1, i.e.: multiple cards/partitions, the one with the newest timestamp gets priority. 256MB RAM with about 10-20 MB/s read/write time to SD, would result in 25-12 seconds for going into or out of hibernation, which would be acceptable for me. In practice it would mean, that if I quickly have to pause me OpenPandora operation (i.e. train stop), I just close my lid, and put the Pandora into my pocket (2-4 seconds), and I am then trusting that the rest reliable happens in my pocket (10-20 seconds).
300CoreBug ReportLowSuperZaxxon interprets on-disk FAT32 filenames differen...Unconfirmed
0%
Task Description With SuperZaxxon Final, I've noticed that stuff running on the Pandora like Thunar and bash are seeing a different interpretation of filenames on disk than when I remove the SD card and insert it into my desktop PC. Specifically, the following two mismatches appear to be present when using a FAT32-formatted SD card: First, the Pandora's VFAT support seems to be be operating with different case-handling settings than desktop Linux distros. Filenames set in all uppercase are forced to all-lowercase on the Pandora (whether they're set on the desktop or the Pandora) but inserting the card into a PC reveals that the. All-lowercase filenames set by software on the Pandora risk appearing in all uppercase when the card is inserted into a PC. (I think the grsync PND is what created the files in question) Among other things, this forces me to use EITHER the PND-based copy of grsync over the network OR a desktop-based copy of rsync with an SD card reader but not both because the kernel will preserve case differences like ALBION.BAT vs. albion.bat but rsync think they are separate files. (resulting in Flash-killing, time-wasting deletion and re-creation) It also makes for irritating entries like "zzt" in DOSBox or "ddr" in PyDance where I can't capitalize the filename properly without employing Department of Redundancy Department with "DDR Songs" or "ZZT.The.Game" as an excuse for mixed case. Second, SuperZaxxon Final seems to be using a different (though still Unicode-capable) filename encoding than all the desktop distros I've tried. Filenames are preserved properly and all-ASCII filenames are displayed properly in all cases, but any non-ASCII characters appear as gibberish on whichever system was not used to set them. I've confirmed this problem with these two filenames: - 03 - The Foggy Dew with Sinéad O'Connor.flac - Lucky Star - Native Misao (Touhou - Native Faith) ???????????????????×??????.mp4 As a Canadian user, my desktops use the "en_CA.utf8" locale and the only other distros I've found which have this problem are Slax and the 1.0 release of its successor, Porteus, both of which use ISO-8859-1 (latin1) for filenames.

123Base OSFeature RequestLowSuggestions for the Pandora-ButtonNew
0%
Task Description My suggestion instead of a full menu, would be to have a tiny overlay over the current running application which allows you to: - relogin (to close all running applications) - quit (stop the active application) - shows the last notifications / toaster messages which you missed while being in a fullscreen app. - possibly even something like plugin support or icons to check out the wifi-strength etc. from fullscreen apps. Implementation wise this could possibly be done using - a topmost window and the same content rendered in screenspace in a GLES hook (which should draw over most applications) or - one of the DSS2 overlays maybe It's definitely something to consider as it was requested on the forums a few times (~"xbox like menu in games").
324CoreBug ReportLowSticky keys setting for shift key disabling itself afte...Unconfirmed

Task Description

The sticky keys option is disabling itself for the shift key. It continues to work with the left shoulder button though.

Unfortunately I have no idea what triggers the  sticky option to be disabled. Sometimes it happens after 1-2 minutes, sometimes it takes longer.

I would also like to point out that using the shoulder button instead of the shift button it _not_ an option! This issue has been reported in the forums, but apperantly was never fixed.

195 CoreFeature RequestHigh Start re-recharge of battery sooner Closed
100%
Task Description Increase battery LVL_4 and LVL_3 threshold. After reaching 100%, in some cases the charge circuit enters "battery full" state, stops charging, and begins to discharge. This is not entirely unexpected behavior according to the spec sheet, although I don't fully understand exactly the situations in which it completes charging. Once the battery is full, the battery will begin discharging. The charge circuit automatically restarts the recharge once the voltage has gone below a certain level (crosses below the LVL_3 voltage threshold) The default LVL_3 voltage threshold is 3.902 volts which is at about 80-85% battery level as recorded by bq27500 chip. In my opinion, this is way too low. Setting the BCIMFTH2 register to 0xCB increases the voltage threshold to about 4.003 volts which is about 93%. Setting it to 0xDC may also be worthwhile, which is just over 95%. By default, if a user leaves their Pandora plugged in overnight, they may wake up to find their Pandora has stopped charging and the capacity has dropped to almost 80%, which can be quite startling to some users who will then report it as a bug. This change will ensure that it never drops below 93-95%, a much more acceptable level. Specific code changes suggested, in the /drivers/power/twl4030_bci_battery.c file, somewhere in the twl4030_bci_battery_probe function (or a function called by it), add the lines: /********************************/ #define KEY_FTH2 0x7F #define REG_BCIMFTH2 0x017 ret = twl4030_i2c_write_u8(TWL4030_MODULE_MAIN_CHARGE, KEY_FTH2, REG_BCIMFKEY); if (ret) return ret; ret = twl4030_i2c_write_u8(TWL4030_MODULE_MAIN_CHARGE, 0xDC, REG_BCIMFTH2); if (ret) return ret; /********************************/ (Move defines to the top, as appropriate)

Task Description

Issue: The screen accidentally turns on even when the lid is closed.

How to reproduce: "Screen blanking" must be enabled! Close the lid, wait more than 10 minutes, tap either shoulder button.  This behaviour happens whether on charge or battery, at the desktop or running an application, provided that the "screen blanking" option is enabled.

Desired outcome: When the Pandora comes out of "screen blanking", it should restore the brightness to the same value that it was before blanking.

Also, the parameter -d for run_pnd.sh is not followed, either. I tried with vlc.pnd from the app store and with Dosbox74.pnd. UPDATE: Original submission contained a wrong filename reference.  136 CoreBug ReportHigh rather high battery discharge while Pandora is powered  ...Closed
100%
Task Description The Pandora does seem to use too much energy while it is turned off. A testcase: The pandora was turned off over night (about 8 hours) and battery state dropped from 98% to 96%. When removing the battery from the pandora for the same amount of time, the state is not changed at all. This is based on the zaxxon firmware release with hotfix3, beta2. Problem: if you don't use the pandora for a while and forget to remove the battery you can cause a deep discharge which might damage the battery. This is also a problem if the Pandora does eg shutdown itself since power is out and you can't directly attach it to a charger. Possible causes: * Design fault in the board. * Too much powered on while the device *should* be completely powered off. The only things that should get power are the clock and the power button. This should basically not drain much. Regarding the clock: The PalmPre is based on the OMAP3, too. There you basically have no discharge when it is powered off, so it is unlikely that the fault is in the OMAP3 itself.
25 CoreBug ReportMedium QWERTY Slowdowns Closed
100%
Task Description Cleaned up a bit according to everything we know. EDIT: notaz did it again. Fixed it. If you find any weird side effects, let us know :) http://notaz.gp2x.de/tmp/Xorg Replace the file /usr/bin/Xorg Be sure to change permissions to 755 Switching between DPAD and keyboard does increase CPU usage on X A LOT. It even tends to crash ALSA if done too extensive. According to notaz, this is due to some very old crap that's still included in X. Internally it has one mouse and one keyboard, everything else is copied every time you press a key and bunch of callbacks are called, messages are sent to all screens and windows. New tests from EvilDragon: Disabling xfwm4 makes things better (ALSA won't crash anymore), but it still lags. Running it in minimal X (directly from .xinitrc) strangely fixes this - X won't eat up more than 17% CPU, regardless how many buttons you press. OLD Entry: The qwerty controls when pressed are causing the system to slowdown making the application running to pause/delay. Ive seen in a least 2 application glquake and supertux. For example pressing space would cause the hiccups and shortly after the pressing stopped the application would regain normal running speed. The other joystick/nub controls work fine. glquake is getting controls direct from the event files. Supertux is using the SDL layer. This was done on angstrom image from dec 19th. EDIT: More tests done by EvilDragon with the latest image (pandora-xfce-image-omap3-pandora-20100102-new-kernel-fn-n-m-support.tar.bz2) When you play with the DPAD and press a keyboard button, the app is making the small pause. You can press as many keyboard buttons as you want after that, there won't be another pause. BUT as soon as you press the DPAD again, it pauses again. Then the next pause does happen when you press a keyboard button, etc. So it feels like it pauses when you switch between DPAD and keyboard. The most important thing: This only happens when you run SDL Games from X. It doesn't occur when running SDL games from the console.
238ApplicationFeature RequestLowQuick key access to OK in dialoguesUnconfirmed
0%
Task Description PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: In many GUI dialogues the default action button (OK, ACCEPT, YES, …) cannot be triggered with a simple key press. Pressing ENTER triggers the element which has focus (usually the first dialogue element), but not the default action, as most computer users would expect! MY WORKAROUND MEANWHILE: Press ALT plus the underlined letter of your desired action. But that's not very convenient as the underlined letter needs to be looked upon first, as the button label can differ from situation to situation (ACCEPT, OK, YES, …) and then 2 keys need to be pressed. SUGGESTED SOLUTION: The custom of many operating systems should be adapted on the OpenPandora as well. SPACE triggers the currently focused element (whatever that may be: list item, radio button, checkbox, etc), and ENTER triggers the default action of that dialogue. Or even better use the Pandora specific A/B/Y/X keys cleverly in those dialogues/selections. I don't know whether there is a standard functionality assignment within this key-group, in MiniMenu "B" is start/confirm, I do not know of any other standard assignments yet.

242ApplicationFeature RequestMediumPressing SHIFT + any key in sequence creates the modifi...Unconfirmed

Task Description ISSUE ENVIRONMENT: If you hold your Pandora in your hands, you only have your thumbs for typing, hence your typing abilities are quite limited. It is hard to press more than 2 keys, and hard to press 2 keys on the same side, as your second thumb does not reach the opposite side all too easy (except you have a basketball player's hands). The modifier keys Start/ALT Select/CTRL Pandora/(META, I guess?) are in the middle of the keyboard, hence the can easily pressed together with another key. But SHIFT lies at an ergonomically problematic side (left boundary). Hence hard to press with other left side keys. SUGGESTED SOLUTION: I suggest that Pandora OS offers an optional and configurable input help. [1|2|3 presses | hold for duration x] SHIFT [timeout y] [modifier key 2] [timeout z] key Produces the same result like SHIFT + modkey2 + key Very likely modifier key 2 and timeout z are not necessary, as you can trigger the SHIFT hold (by your defined action), and then press the modifier key 2 and the other key at once, as the other modifier keys are laid at a central (ergonomically better) position.
